Hi Cauf,

I think this punk just handed Trump the presidency. The list of attacks on Trump is extensive and this one (a failure thank God) puts the whole list in boldface. I predict that this will trigger massive outrage from "normal" Americans and another avalanche of campaign donations. A Trump win is all but guaranteed now. BTW Trump looked heroic after he was shot - rumor as it that he wanted to go back and finish the rally.

The shooter can’t feel anything now -‘cept the flames of hell.

Mayorkas needs to go immediately; he heads the secret service and like his border policy, it’s an epic fail.

Trump is NOT Hitler. To compare Trump with Hitler gives Trump too much credit. Hitler was a mastermind at manipulating people and getting them to bend to his will, no matter how outrageous his views were (and they were so outrageous, views of madman). Trump is a carnival barker, snake oil salesman and if the American people are stupid enough to follow him then they deserve him.

The shooter is a registered Republican, those who know him said he leaned left, and he also made a $15 donation to a Democratic organization, but this doesn't amount to much. as who his friends are, or how close the are, has not been reported, some die-hard Republicans have left or been booted for not being conservative enough, or falling into line with Trump, and a person might register as a Republican or Democrat just to vote in the primaries, as if you register as anything else, you can't. Trump reaped what he and other Republicans have sowed for decades, probably starting with Newt Gingrich, who was the first to openly advocate for disagreeing and bashing Democrats or any opposition no matter what. Older politicians say they used to be friends with those in the opposing party, or could at least have a civil dialogue and openly agree on basic facts, but both parties have become hopelessly corrupt, and we deserve better than what's on the table. While the Constitution explicitly states it's our duty to depose tyrants, or revolt if necessary, and as much as I despise Trump, I don't condone an assassination attempt, and if you're going to make one, you should hit who you're aiming at and no one else. Maybe the shooter did so for political reasons, but I wouldn't have used an AR-15. They're accurate in the right hands, but I'd take a spring loaded Remington over an AR-15 every time. I am for gun control, but the Remington I had was the most accurate rifle I ever fired, and a lot easier to handle. It was semi-automatic, and this may be borderline irresponsible, but to turn a semi-automatic into an automatic, all you have to do is clip one little piece of metal. Most semi-automatics aren't built for this, so while it will work, you'll shortly destroy the weapon thereafter if not immediately after firing. An AR-15 is built to be an automatic and packs a bigger punch than most Remington rifles. The 5.56 round is the same diameter as a .22, but longer, and I wouldn't try to shoot one w/ a 22, while there are some AR-15s that have been built to handle .22 rounds, which are small and considered weak, and this is true for hand guns, but I chopped down a tree with a .22 rifle. I'd take the smaller kick and the ease of handling over the punch, as a decent .22 rifle could get the job done and is easier, both legally and especially for a novice. I had a single shot .22 that was 100 years old. I think it was Stevens or a Smith and Wesson, but probably a Stevens, as it was long, heavy, and accurate, and it hit a lot harder than my relatively modern Remington. I had a dead eye, but haven't shot a handgun or rifle since I was 14 (my dad gave me my first rifle when I was 6), or over 30 years ago. It does seem strange to me the Remington I had as a child is no longer legal in NY, as it held 18 rounds and 5 is now the limit for a typical citizen. I never shot an animal, I mainly shot at cards. From over 200 yards, my dad could tell me which heart to hit on a 9 of hearts I could do it every time, but my vision was a lot better back then. Vision peaks for most people at age 12, and even as an older guy starting to feel presbyopia, I still have 20/20 vision, but at 10 to 12, it was much better. My dad started giving me BB guns that had slightly warped sites and barrels and I could compensate and still hit a steel pool from over 100 feet every time. I could see the BBs leaving the rifle and their arc. My dad was a Vietnam vet, and he said he never saw anyone who was as good of a shot. I miss all those guns, and while my dad, despite all his flaws, gave me good instruction (never point at someone unless you're ready to kill them, consider what's behind, or don't shoot through, always assume a gun is loaded, etc.) he confiscated the guns once I was clearly going through puberty, except for one BB gun I managed to squirrel away, and even that thing is illegal nowadays. I'll always be torn about guns. I honestly don't think most Americans are responsible enough to own them, I'm definitely for licensing and registration, and I grew up in upstate NY. I understand why cops shooting 9 mm rounds sometimes have to unload on a person, as a 9 mm handgun is not enough enough to stop most men with a single shot unless you get extremely lucky, and whenever I went into the woods, I brought the Remington. It wouldn't stop a bear unless I hit it in the eye, but I'd rather have 18 chances than 1, or now, 5, but in the one situation I had a gun pulled on me, having a gun myself would have made it worse. It isn't like the movies. A friend and I were walking our dogs, and he complained they were off the leash, even though both dogs were well trained and the parking lot was otherwise empty. We told him to fuck off and a few minutes later, we heard a click behind us. The guy was a lunatic and he had us dead to rights. We talked him down, and this happened in Lefrac city in Queens, which is still a violent ghetto, and my friend was only 16, a first generation Russian immigrant and a drug dealer, and the neighborhood was and remains over 95% black. I'm brown and I wasn't doing business with anyone in that neighborhood and most of the people were decent. When we finally had a police presence for a short time after 9/11, most of the commuters told the cops they deserved to be protected every day, just like everyone else, but life was not easy for anyone. Three guys tried to mug me and I could see it coming, and my first thought was unless it's one, they don't have a gun. They beat the crap out of me, but I gave them nothing, because it's the kind of neighborhood where if I did, I would have been mugged every day for the rest of my life. I'm 99% sure my Russian friend had the guy killed. He said we couldn't have insane guys like that around. The cops came 20 minutes after he pulled on us, and we both lied and said it didn't happen. I never saw the guy who pulled on us again.

Apologies for the book and I know we don't see to eye on a lot of issues, and I suspect you go a bit harder than you feel as that's just how it is if you're writing and want clicks. You've always been civil to me, and this article was obviously thought provoking.

He could have registered Republican in order to vote for hopeless GOP contenders in the state’s GOP primaries.
